D'Oyly Carte Island History

Richard D'Oyly Carte, who owned the island and built the iconic house in 1890, was the business partner of the infamous Gilbert & Sullivan duo, as well as the owner of London's 5* hotels, including the Savoy, Claridge's and the Connaught.

D'Oyly Carte Island was the weekend retreat where the great, good and talented came for lavish parties attended by the likes on Oscar Wild, Lady Jeanette (‘Jennie”) Churchill (mother of Winston), JM Barrie (Peter Fan fame), Sir Arthur Sullivan and Sir William Gilbert (Gilbert & Sullivan) to be entertained and to entertain. Come and join us at D’Oyly Carte Island….…. it’s your turn!
